I stumbled upon The Button Buck while browsing Joy’s Collective Market in St. Charles, MO.  I bought a pair of adorable tiny yellow button studs and have a been a fan ever since.  Shop owner, Heather, also uses vintage fabrics to make one-of-a-kind necklaces, earrings, and rings.  I love the idea of upcycling something old to create something new.  The result is eco-friendly and something that you won’t find anywhere else.  Win, win.  Heather just relaunched her website on Friday and is giving first dibs on her newest designs to my readers!  Read on to see some of my favorite from the shop, learn more about The Button Buck, and enter to win some vintage fabric covered goodies.

What motivated you to start an Etsy shop?
I had been collecting (hoarding if you ask my husband) vintage handkerchiefs for a long time. I had been looking for a way to use them, to honor them really and came across fabric covered button making on Pinterest. I ran to the craft store, bought a button kit and my shop was born with a few tiny buttons.
How long does it take to create a pair of earrings?
The actual construction of a set of earrings doesn’t take long, to cover the button and glue it to the setting, maybe ten minutes. All the prep work to make a set of earrings is what is time consuming. Scouring local estate sales for vintage fabrics, laundering and ironing them, tracing the areas you want to use, cutting out the fabric circles…that all takes a significant amount of time. Sourcing the fabrics takes the most time. You can do a whole day of estate sale shopping and find absolutely nothing or some days you can go to one sale that is loaded with beautiful fabrics.

Favorite part of the business?
Honestly, it has been the relationships I’ve built with other makers. I had no idea going into this that I would meet and befriend such wonderful, uplifting, talented, supportive people. Whether it be the Instagram maker community or the incredibly amazing collection of people at Joys, someone is always there to support your business in some way. It’s so refreshing and keeps you so grateful and humble.
What is your bestseller?
Vintage fabric covered button studs. People love the stories behind the fabrics, love that they have been rescued and given new life. I use a lot of tattered material most people would call trash. I see the possibility in the smallest pieces, the torn up or stained pieces.
