The intricate wire-wrapped details make all of the jewelry at Pillar of Salt very unique and beautiful. Shop owner, Sara, began wire wrapping in 2011 while searching for a way to string handmade beads for a Christmas present. As a busy wife and mom of 3, Sara kept experimenting with the craft as a creative outlet and opened an Etsy shop to sell her creations the following year. I also learned that Sara’s designs have been featured on shows like Chicago P.D. and The Vampire Diaries! And her jewelry was included in swag bags at GBK’s 2015 Golden Globes Celebrity Gift Lounge. How cool is that?!
What is the story behind your shop’s name?
You have to have a good sense of humor to appreciate my business name. When I married a Lott, I became Lott’s wife. (In Genesis, Lot’s wife was infamously turned into a pillar of salt.) And the other meaning involved with salt has to do with Matthew 5 where Jesus calls us to be “salt and light” in this world.
How long does it take to make a piece?
One of my more involved woven wire pendants may take roughly 2-4 hours to complete.
What is your least favorite part of the business?
The least enjoyable aspect of running a business for me is the bookkeeping and trying to stay on top of all the accounting & tax requirements.
What inspires your designs?
My shower curtain. An antique chandelier. A cool font. Something sparks an idea which sparks another idea. The finished product probably looks nothing like what sparked the first doodle. And sometimes I just play with the wire and see what happens. Through The Artisan Group, I have been able to submit pieces to TV show stylists and it’s great fun and a great challenge to think up a new design with a specific character in mind.
Sara sent a pair of her best selling spiral wire wrapped earrings. The white magnesite stone is accented by oxidized copper coils. The wire gives these earrings a rustic boho vibe, and the white stone keeps is classic. My 5 year old was even impressed with these as soon as I opened the box, commenting about how pretty and cool they looked. The spiral wire coils add beautiful texture and an extra layer of interest to an already unique design. The length is just right – not too short and not too long. The wires match my hair color, too. Love, love, love!
