Mary Laskey Enamel Designs Etsy shop is full of eye popping, happy color. It’s my kind of place. The Chicago artist creates enamel earrings, necklaces, rings, & bracelets. Mary started making jewelry in 1990 and friends encouraged her to sell her pieces. What started as a passion for glass work turned into a love of enameling and metalsmithing. Mary opened her own metal jewelry and enameling studio in Chicago in 1998 called Fabrications. She currently teaches enameling classes at Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago. Check out some of my favorites and learn more about the shop from Mary herself.
Why did you open an Etsy shop?
In 2006 it was a great alternative to a traditional website and gave me the ability to reach a much bigger audience.
How long does it take to make a piece?
Depends on the style, and on how cooperative the enamel firing process is, but roughly anywhere from 1 to 3 hours.
What is your favorite part of the business?
The magic of the Internet: I can be in lots of places at once, without actually being there–it’s like having a super power!
Mary sent a pair of Tiny Teardrop Studs for me to review. I love the little pop of color and interest that these add to an outfit. You can get these cuties in so many different colors. There’s even more available than what’s listed on Etsy. At only 8mm long, these are perfect for adults or kids. They would even be great for multiple ear piercings. These tiny teardrops remind me of my first earrings from my mom, which she wore as a teenager. I love the retro vibe! The earrings arrived neatly packaged in a gift bag, so they are ready for gift giving if that’s what you plan to do. You can try to give them as a gift, but I’m sure you’ll want to keep them for yourself.
