Cellar Door Shoppe takes old, broken dishes and tins and gives them a new life as jewelry. The designs are bright, colorful, and unique. Shop owners Shelle & Tanya are a mother and daughter team who started this unique business in 2014. They will even make custom pieces out of your own broken dishes and tins. What a great way to preserve memories of your Grandma’s china or any other broken pieces you might have, but can’t bear to throw in the trash. Here’s what the ladies have to say about their shop.
What is the story behind the shop name?
A famous linguist once said that of all the phrases in the English language, of all the endless combinations of words in all of history, that “cellar door” is the most beautiful. This quote from the movie Donnie Darko has always stuck with me, and was quickly agreed on to be our shop name. It is a word that sounds musical to the ear.
How did you start making jewelry?
A few years ago a motorcycle came crashing through the wall, inside Shelle’s split level home, right where the kitchen cupboards were. After the clean up, she was looking at her boxes of broken vintage dishes, she remembered seeing dishes repurposed into necklaces & so it began. Tanya took the same idea, but using her old embossed candy tins that were collecting dust.
Favorite part of the business?
Getting to be creative. We love making something new out of something that has been overlooked, and can become treasured once again.
It always seems to be the one you’re currently working on.
